243This thesis is the result of an investigation begun as a hobby in 1935. Interest in the Chinese was first aroused by the Chinese Joss house, a mysterious, windowless, curved roof structure on Front Street in Boise, Idaho. Immediately inquiries were made of the pioneers in Boise and the pioneer newspapers in the State Historical Society of that city were carefully checked for any items on the Chinese. Fortunately early day newspaper reporters and editors were also interested in the Chinese and some very valuable material on Chinese customs was found in the newspapers...
