This article offers the first complete census of the ancient inscriptions which were formerly displayed in the cathedral of San Pietro di Castello and adjacent buildings, such as the bell tower and the patriarchal palace. The corpus includes 12 inscriptions, 6 of which are examined here in detail. Through a thorough analysis of inter-related data (early handwritten transcriptions, monumental evidence, archaeological and epigraphic parallels) new light is shed on the inscriptions both as sources for reconstructing ancient history, and as evidence for better understanding the architectural evolution of the former cathedral of the Serenissima
