The European Geosciences Union (EGU) is Europe’s premier union of geoscientists. The EGU General Assembly attracts over 11,000 scientists each year. ‘Soil as a record of the past’ is the name of a subdivision of the Soil System Sciences (SSS) division introduced in 2012 at the Gen- eral Assembly of the EGU held in Vienna (Austria) on 22–27 April. The aim of this subdivision is to bring together results regarding soils used as potential records of both natural and human- induced processes occurred during the past centuries or millennia, as well as to create a permanent forum of stimulating scientific de- bates on this topic
