Asperger\u27s Syndrome Qualitative Study

Throughout the profession of speech-language pathology, the autistic spectrum is a familiar term; however the term Asperger\u27s syndrome, which falls within the autistic spectrum may not be as understood. In this poster presentation information will be given on the history of Asperger\u27 s syndrome, the diagnostic approach, characteristics of Asperger\u27s syndrome, and different areas of speech language skills common to individuals with Asperger\u27s syndrome. Additional research using qualitative inquiry will be described in the form of a case study. Interviews with the mother of an individual with Asperger\u27s syndrome were obtained through phone conversations and e-mails. Qualitative study is based on the researcher\u27s observations, interviews, and interpretations and is a means of research that focuses on a specific case or phenomenon. The parent of an individual with Asperger\u27s syndrome was interviewed in an attempt to understand the family unit experience of a family with an individual member diagnosed with Asperger\u27 s syndrome. Transcriptions from the interviews were coded and analyzed for patterns and themes. Final conclusions were made based on the data collected
