The stump which is left when a tree is cut reveals a number of things about its rate of growth and the conditions which have affected its development. During the fall of 1922 and the spring of 1923 the writer measured the surfaces of a number of these and counted their annual rings for the purpose of comparison, and to discover, if possible, some conditions governing their growth rates
