We know little about disorders of written language processing among Chinese speakers. There is however an increasing understanding of the cognitive processes and neurological bases of oral reading and writing to dictation among Chinese speakers. This knowledge can now be applied to improve our understanding of developmental disorders of reading and writing in Chinese, which we now believe is far more prevalent than previously assumed. We will present data from a study of the prevalence of dyslexia in Beijing and we will discuss how cognitive models of reading and writing can be applied to the assessment and remediation of dyslexia in Chinese.IUPsy
