Intercultural Education in Museums: A socio-educational research and intervention contribution

Relatório de Estágio do Mestrado em Ciências da Educação apresentado à Faculdade de Psicologia e de Ciências da EducaçãoThe current report addresses activities developed during the internship of the Master’s in Educational Sciences of the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Coimbra. The internship took place within the Postgraduate Programme in Museology and Cultural Heritage of the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro. This report presents three projects which have intercultural education and education in museums as prime focus. The contributions of the projects are pointed out in the areas of socio-educational intervention and socio-educational investigation. The Intercultural Education and Mediation in Museums Programme (PEMIM) was aimed at students of museology and pedagogy, as well as, professionals of the educational sectors in museums. Its aim was to increase the intercultural awareness and the knowledge about intercultural perceptions in museum education and mediation of the 23 participants. For such purpose a praxis methodology and a multi-level evaluation were used. The results show positive intraindividual changes regarding the knowledge about intercultural education in museums, as well as, transfer of learning of the participants, either on a personal or professional level. The project of Cross-cultural Validation of the Inventory of Intercultural Concerns (IPI) allowed the obtention of a Brazilian version with a semantic, conceptual, operational and measurement equivalence to the Portuguese version of the IPI. In a sample of 212 subjects, the IPI revealed a one-dimensional structure (24 items), the explained variance was 40.281% and the internal consistency index was .935. The project “Escape Cave” in the Earth Sciences Museum (Rio de Janeiro) is based on the game escape room linked to the two main themes of the museum (palaeontology and geology). The methodology considered the building up of the educational action and the observation of the participation of the museum professionals in the process of its preparation and execution. The results of the evaluation were positive regarding the satisfaction of the participants (n=30) and team, envisaging motivation for new educational projects in the museum. Globally the three projects were a socio-educational research and intervention contribution, connecting intercultural education to education in museums.O presente trabalho relata as atividades desenvolvidas no estágio curricular do Mestrado em Ciências da Educação da Faculdade de Psicologia e Ciências da Educação da Universidade de Coimbra. O estágio ocorreu no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Museologia e Patrimônio da Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio e Janeiro. Neste relatório expõem-se três projetos que têm como eixos a educação intercultural e a educação em museus, cujas contribuições apresentam-se nas áreas de intervenção e investigação socioeducativa. O Programa de Educação e Mediação Intercultural em Museus (PEMIM) foi destinado a estudantes de museologia e pedagogia, assim como a profissionais dos setores educativos de museus. Este visou aumentar a consciência intercultural e os conhecimentos dos 23 participantes sobre as perspectivas interculturais em educação e mediação em museus. Para tal, utilizou-se da metodologia da práxis e de uma avaliação multinível. Os resultados obtidos evidenciam mudanças positivas intraindividuais em relação aos conhecimentos sobre as perspectivas interculturais na educação em museus, assim como transferência das aprendizagens, quer a nível pessoal, quer profissional, dos participantes. O projeto de Validação Transcultural do Inventário de Preocupações Interculturais (IPI) permitiu obter uma versão brasileira, com equivalência semântica, conceitual, operacional e de mensuração, à versão portuguesa do IPI. Numa amostra de 212 sujeitos, o IPI revelou uma estrutura unidimensional (24 itens), a variância explicada foi de 40.281% e o índice de consistência interna foi de .935. O projeto educativo “Fuga da Caverna” no Museu de Ciências da Terra (Rio de Janeiro) baseia-se num jogo de escape room vinculado aos dois temas centrais do museu (paleontologia e geologia). A metodologia de trabalho teve em conta a construção da ação educativa e a observação da participação dos profissionais do museu no processo de elaboração e execução da mesma. Os resultados da avaliação foram positivos no que diz respeito à satisfação dos participantes (n=30) e dos profissionais, deixando antever motivação para novos projetos educativos no museu. Globalmente, os três projetos foram uma contribuição no âmbito da investigação e da intervenção socioeducativa, aliando a educação intercultural à educação em museus
