Zearalenone in teas and medicinal plants for preparation of infusions

Mycotoxins produced by fungi of the genus Fusarium are important because they are agents that cause diseases in plants, animals and humans. Zearalenone (ZEA) is a mycotoxin produced by Fusarium spp., particularly by the species F. graminearum. In humans, ZEA binds to estrogenic receptors (ER), competing with 17-β-estradiol. It is therefore considered an endocrine disruptor and produces haematological, cytotoxic, genotoxic, immunotoxic and hepatotoxic effects.Tea and medicinal plants infusions consumption have been increasing, associated with healthier lifestyles and food choices. However, there are very few studies evaluating the occurrence of contaminants in these food matrices.The objectives of the study were to determine the occurrence of ZEA in teas and medicinal plants marketed in Portugal and the human exposure due to its consumption.Thirty-eight samples of commercially available teas and medicinal plants (convenience samples) were purchased in the region of Coimbra and Aveiro, and the ZEA content was determined by a competitive ELISA kit.Of the samples analyzed, 24 (63.16%) were contaminated with a ZEA content higher than LOD (1.75 μg/kg). The contents of the positive samples ranged from 1.82 μg/kg to 19.02 μg/kg, with a mean value of 8.93±5.20 μg/kg. The estimated daily intake (EDI) of ZEA was 0.0227 μg/kg b.w./day. Samples of medicinal and biological plants outside the European Union and sold in bulk were those with the highest ZEA levels. However, comparing with other studies in teas and medicinal plants the values are quite inferior. Despite this, due to the increasing consumption of tea and medicinal plants infusions that have occurred in the last years and the trend of growth of the same, these values could become significant.As micotoxinas são metabolitos secundários produzidos por espécies diferentes de fungos. As micotoxinas produzidas por fungos do género Fusarium são importantes, pois são agentes causadores de doenças em plantas, animais e humanos. A zearalenona (ZEA) é uma micotoxina produzida por Fusarium spp., particularmente pela espécie F. graminearum. No Homem, a ZEA liga-se aos recetores estrogénicos (ER), competindo com o 17-β-estradiol. É por isso considerada um desregulador endócrino e produz efeitos hematológicos,citotóxicos, genotóxicos, imunotóxicos e hepatotóxicos.O consumo de chá e as infusões de plantas medicinais tem vindo a aumentar, associado a estilos de vida e opções alimentares consideradas mais saudáveis. Contudo, são escassos os estudos que avaliam a ocorrência de contaminantes nestas matrizes alimentares.Os objetivos do estudo foram a determinação da ocorrência de ZEA em chás e plantas medicinais comercializadas em Portugal e a exposição humana decorrente do seu consumo. Foram adquiridas 38 amostras de chás e plantas medicinais disponíveis comercialmente (amostras de conveniência), na região de Coimbra e Aveiro, e o teor de ZEA foi determinado por um kit ELISA competitivo.Das amostras analisadas, 24 (63,16%) encontravam-se contaminadas com um teor de ZEA superior ao LOD (1,75 μg/kg). Os teores das amostras positivas variaram entre 1,82 μg/kg e 19,02 μg/kg, com um valor médio de 8,93±5,20 μg/kg. A ingestão diária estimada (EDI) de ZEA foi de 0,0227 μg/kg p.c/dia. As amostras de plantas medicinais, biológicas, fora da União Europeia e vendidas a granel foram as que apresentaram os teores de ZEA mais elevados.No entanto, comparando com outros estudos em chás e plantas medicinais os valores são bastante inferiores. Apesar disso, devido ao aumento do consumo de infusões de chá e de plantas medicinais que tem ocorrido nos últimos anos e da tendência de crescimento do mesmo, estes valores poderão tornar-se significativos
