International audienceInformalities in urban environments may be regarded as disorders or regulative elements on several levels (economic, urbanistic, political, social and psychosocial). The text proposes exploring the symbolic dimension. In Istanbul, a negative and generally false narrative has been elaborated out of informalities and composes a foundational alterity against which the common norm of a good Istanbul and a good city is constructed buttressed, and updated. This process allows us to clarify the work of identityalterity tension in normative construction, and in particular a “placing in alterity” which does not directly produce exclusion.
