International audienceEven twenty years after it was proclaimed in 1804, Haiti’s independence was still not acknowledged on the international scene, the former colonial power maintaining its sovereignty claim over its ex-colony. However, after several failed attempts to reconquer it, France has to accept to answer to president Boyer’s overtures. Charles X, the new king, consents in recognising the new State of Haiti in exchange of a heavy indemnity fee to the former landowners, with extortionate payment terms. Boyer decides to accept this ruling in the hope of negotiating the amount and the payment terms. These will be discussed in 1838, as Louis-Philippe succeeds to Charles X.
