La démarche collaborative du groupe français Nexans : une stratégie d'innovation ouverte ?

International audienceThis article studies the collaborative process within the French Nexans group. Although initially only a small cable-making factory, this century-old company has become a world leader in its field. Its development is due to the rise of electricity. In the early 20th century, taken over by the General Electricity Company (GEC), it continued growing. During the 1980s, it was renamed Alcatel Cable, and in the year 2000 the Nexans subsidiary was created. It acquired its independence in 2005 following Alcatel’s withdrawal from that industry. Nexans presents two major assets: a strong specialization and a continuing investment policy in research and development. Upstream research is centralized and concentrated in two main areas: polymers and superconductors. Nexans is the only company which masters the entire process. The specificities of this high-technology domain have forced it into a collaborative process establishing real inter-organizational networks. Nexans’ cooperations are mainly vertical or transversal. Recurrent partnerships with structures, both public and private, are established in order to facilitate a collective creation of knowledge and an exchange of expertise essential in the absence of a predictive scientific model. Apart from the fact that such technological collaborations enrich its offer, Nexans is also seeking to enter new market segments and to extend its geographical positions. Therefore, it must be admitted that such an innovation process relates to the logic of open innovation.Cet article étudie la démarche collaborative du groupe français Nexans. À l’origine petite fabrique de câbles, cette entreprise séculaire est devenue un expert mondial dans son domaine. Elle doit son développement à l’essor de l’électricité puis, au début du vingtième siècle, reprise par la Compagnie Générale d’Électricité (CGE), elle poursuit sa croissance. Au cours des années quatre-vingts, elle prend le nom d’Alcatel Câble et c’est en l’an 2000 que la filiale Nexans est créée. Elle acquiert son indépendance en 2005 à la suite du désengagement total d’Alcatel de cette industrie. Nexans présente deux atouts majeurs : une forte spécialisation et une politique d’investissements en recherche et développement continue. La recherche « amont » est centralisée et concentrée dans deux domaines principaux : les polymères et les supraconducteurs. Pour ces derniers, Nexans est la seule entreprise qui maîtrise le processus complet. Les spécificités de ce domaine de haute technologie lui imposent une démarche collaborative instituant de véritables réseaux interorganisationnels. Ses coopérations s’avèrent être essentiellement verticales ou transversales. Des partenariats récurrents avec des structures tant publiques que privées sont noués afin de faciliter une création collective de connaissances et un échange d’expertises indispensables en l’absence d’un modèle scientifique prédictif. Outre le fait que de telles collaborations technologiques lui permettent d’enrichir son offre, Nexans recherche aussi grâce à elles l’accès à de nouveaux segments et l’extension de ses positions géographiques.
