Genome annotation is a major challenge in connecting genotypes with phenotypes. Identifying long noncoding RNAs (lncRNA) in genomes is part of this challenge; they are relatively low-expressed and have only been highlighted in 2012 thanks to the development of high throughput sequencing technologies. This research work has led to the identification of a large number of lncRNAs in livestock species, particularly in the chicken, in which no lncRNA had yet been described at the beginning of this thesis (2015).
