Sensory processing sensitivity is believed to be a personality trait in up to 20% of individuals, including other species than humans. The trait is associated with higher levels of unpleasant arousal, a higher sensitivity to sensory input, empathy and a deeper level of informational processing in the brain. Sensory processing sensitivity is measured using the Highly Sensitive Person Scale (HSPS), which has been evaluated in several languages.
