Evaluación de materiales bioadsorbentes modificados térmicamente en la remoción de nutrientes presentes en aguas residuales municipales de la ciudad de Barranquilla

In the present work clamshells (Polymesoda sp.), oyster shells (Crassostrea rhizophorae) and coral rock (Coquina) were evaluated as bioadsorbent materials for the removal of nutrients presents in municipal wastewater. The bioadsorbents were brought to sizes of 1.18 and 2.36 mm, thermally modified at temperatures between 120 and 1000°C, and their textural and elementals properties were analyzed by different characterization techniques, in which they presented macroporous characteristics, as main compound CaCO3, as well as decomposition at temperatures higher than 600°C in CaO and CO2. Mounts were made at laboratory scale using 0.3 L of wastewater and each material in concentrations of 8 and 12 g/L, under continuous agitation. It was obtained as the best material the modified coquina at 400°C in a concentration of 8 g/L, with removal percentages higher than 30% in PO4, P and NO3, and 11% in NO2 and SO4. These conditions were used on a pilot scale in a Batch reactor, obtaining removal percentages higher than 45% in NO3, 24% in PO4, P and NO2, and 12% in SO4 in the 5 hour measurement. Additionally, the material from the reactor was reused after being treated at 120°C and a higher than 90% removal was found in PO4 and P. The results allowed to conclude that the modified coquina at 400°C is viable for the removal of nutrients, in a tertiary treatment system coupled to a Batch reactor with a fixed bed.En el presente trabajo se evaluaron conchas de almeja (Polymesoda sp.), de ostra (Crassostrea rhizophorae) y roca coralina (Coquina) como materiales bioadsorbentes para la remoción de nutrientes presentes en aguas residuales municipales. Los bioadsorbentes fueron llevados a tamaños de 1.18 y 2.36 mm, modificados térmicamente a temperaturas entre 120 y 1000°C, y sus propiedades texturales y elementales fueron analizadas por diferentes técnicas de caracterización, en las cuales presentaron características macroporosas, como principal compuesto el CaCO3, así como descomposición a temperaturas superiores a 600°C en CaO y CO2. Se realizaron montajes a escala de laboratorio utilizando 0.3 L de agua residual y cada material en concentraciones de 8 y 12 g/L, bajo agitación continua. Se obtuvo como mejor material la coquina modificada a 400°C en concentración de 8 g/L, con porcentajes de remoción superiores al 30% en PO4, P y NO3, y 11% en NO2 y SO4. Estas condiciones fueron usadas a escala piloto en un reactor tipo Batch, obteniendo porcentajes de remoción mayores al 45% en NO3, 24% en PO4, P y NO2, y 12% en SO4 en la 5 hora de medición. Adicionalmente, el material procedente del reactor se reutilizó después de ser tratado a 120°C y se encontró una remoción superior al 90% en PO4 y P. Los resultados permitieron concluir que la coquina modificada a 400°C es viable para la remoción de nutrientes, en un sistema de tratamiento terciario acoplado a un reactor tipo Batch con lecho fijo
