Este ensaio tem como objetivo apresentar e estudar a poesia religiosa (parcialmente inédita) do cristão-novo nascido no Rio de Janeiro João Mendes da Silva (1659-1736), pai do dramaturgo António José. Depois de um breve resumo de sua biografia, apresento a sua obra literária profana e em seguida a religiosa.
