Department of Intercollegiate Athletics records

The Department supports and promotes athletics at the University of Maryland. Its responsibilities include game-day organization, ticket sales, the hiring of coaches and other support personnel, and academic support services for athletes. The bulk of this record group covers the period from 1928 to approximately 2000. It consists of over seventy separate accessions and nearly 700 linear feet of material; the collection is continually expanding in size and coverage. It includes bound ledgers documenting the accomplishments of several of the university's athletic teams, a signature book from the 1952 Sugar Bowl, film, audio and videotapes, scrapbooks, baseball rule books dating to the 1870s (Acc. 94-90), and scorecards. Only a small portion has been processed. The unprocessed portion includes film, video and audiotapes, primarily of football, men's and women's basketball, and lacrosse games, practices, and scrimmages, dating from 1947 to the late 1990s. There are numerous preliminary inventories.
