Bruce Gardner (1943-2008) was a professor of Agricultural and Resource Economics (AREC) at the University of Maryland from 1981 until 2008, with a single leave of absence to serve as Assistant Secretary for Economics in the U.S. Department of Agriculture from 1989 to 1992. He served as the AREC department chair from 2000-2003 and interim dean from 2003-2005. Gardner was awarded the title of Distinguished University Professor in 1995. In addition to his work at the university, Gardner was also deeply involved in numerous agricultural policy initiatives, both domestically and internationally.
