An ancient town existing from the 2nd century BCE to the 6th century CE, the remains of which were discovered on the site of today’s Marina el-Alamein on the northern coast of Egypt, developed under the influence of several civilizations. Its location on trading routes connecting nearby Alexandria with the west favoured a merging of cultures. The Hellenic civilization, to which the town owns its origin, was gradually replaced by the Roman. Impacted significantly by ancient Egypt, Christianity finally arrived there. The syncretism prevailing there manifested itself in art, architecture, religion, beliefs and customs.
