Federigo Enriques and the habit of sincerity

This paper analyzes the position of Federigo Enriques with regard to an ancient philosophical problem, namely the ethical value of science. The question can be formulated in the following way: should scientific research be disinterested, and therefore represent an end, a value in itself? Or should it rather aim at applicable knowledge and therefore be functional to other purposes, to other values? The position of Enriques regarding this problem is quite interesting, because the Italian mathematician highlights some links between the rules of scientific ethos and the methodological aspects of scientific research.In questo saggio verrà analizzata e discussa la posizione di Federigo Enriques riguardo un antico problema filosofico, ossia il valore etico della scienza. La questione si può formulare così: la ricerca scientifica deve essere disinteressata e quindi rappresentare un fine, un valore in sé, secondo lo slogan “scienza per la scienza” o deve piuttosto mirare ad una conoscenza applicabile e quindi essere funzionale ad altri fini, ad altri valori? La posizione di Enriques riguardo a questo problema è piuttosto interessante, perché il filosofo livornese mette in luce alcuni legami tra le norme dell’ethos scientifico e gli aspetti metodologici ed epistemologici della ricerca scientifica
