This paper analyzes the position of Federigo Enriques with regard to an ancient philosophical problem, namely the ethical value of science. The question can be formulated in the following way: should scientific research be disinterested, and therefore represent an end, a value in itself? Or should it rather aim at applicable knowledge and therefore be functional to other purposes, to other values?
