It was during the Middle Ages that the majority of stained-glass windows were elaborated as an ornament for religious buildings, particularly in Europe. This heritage has passed through the centuries exposed to the atmosphere, precipitations, microorganisms and human activity (pollution and degradation). The combination of these altering factors and the low durability of these glasses (induced by their composition) cause significant physical and chemical modifications of their surface resulting in the formation of a transformed layer at the interface with the atmosphere.
