Lynn Harry Coyne was born in Braddock, Pennsylvania. Raised in the Pittsburgh area until he was 14, Coyne’s family moved to Bloomington, Indiana, in 1958. Coyne graduated from Bloomington High School in 1962. He then enrolled at Indiana University, but before graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force (1965). Serving as an aircrew member who accumulated more than 1,000 hours flying time, Coyne rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. While in the Air Force, he attended the East European Language Institute at Syracuse University, graduating third in his class.
