William Forgy McNagny was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on January 21, 1922. McNagny graduated from the Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana, before enrolling at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. After two years at Swarthmore, McNagny left to serve as an officer in the US Army. He was discharged in 1945, returned to Indiana, and enrolled at the Indiana University School of Law. McNagny received his LL.B. degree, with high distinction, membership in the Order of the Coif, first in his class, in 1947. After law school, McNagny returned to his hometown and began to practice in the firm that would become Barrett and McNagny.
