This paper’s main objective is to examine digital journalism in two steps. Firstly, a literature review was conducted on present-day digital journalism. In addition, its relationship with citizen empowerment was analysed. Secondly, an exploratory study was performed on Google news (in Spanish) to ascertain the topic trends around empowerment and ICTs during 2017. The survey sample comprised 332 news items, divided mainly between Spain and Latin America. The results reveal a predominance of news items where the author’s name is not indicated over those which do.
