Un acercamiento a la salud de la población adulta mayor mexicana en Estados Unidos (EU) de América y en México: una visión comparada

In recent decades the tendency of Mexicans who migrate to the United States is to remain longer time in that country; along with that, it has been observed a greater heterogeneity in the composition of the age structure and sex of migrants. The studies about the health of Mexican migrants in the United States has been of inte- rest for investigations, since it has been seen that being undocumented, as occur with most of the migration from Mexico to the United States, limits medical care for Mexicans (CONAPO, 2005). In terms of the adaptation of migrants to the new culture, it is said that those who have more time of stay in the United States would have worse health than others, due to the adoption of less-healthy habits (Escobar, Lowell and Martin, 2013). In addition, it has been mentioned that the concentration of migrants in their same ethnic communities is associated with a better mental health (Yabiku, et al., 2009). In general, it can be said that the adoption of new behaviors can affect the health of migrants and especially in those who are older. For that reason, this paper is mainly aimed to analyze the health conditions of the elderly population of Mexican origin residing in the United States and the health conditions of the older people in Mexico. In order to carry out what was mentioned above, the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) and the Mexican Health and Aging Study (MHAS) 2012 are used as data sources.En las últimas décadas, la tendencia de los mexicanos que emigran a Estados Unidos (EU) de América es permanecer más tiempo en ese país. Junto con dicha tendencia se ha observado una mayor heterogeneidad en la composición de la estructura etaria y por sexo de los migrantes. Los estudios sobre la salud de los migrantes mexicanos en EU han sido motivo de interés para las investigaciones, debido a que se ha visto que residir de forma indocumentada, como suele ocurrir en gran parte de la migración de México hacia EU, limita la atención médica hacia los mexicanos. En términos de la adaptación de los migrantes a la nueva cultura, se habla de que quienes tienen más tiempo de estancia en EU podrían tener peor salud que otros, debido a la adopción de hábitos menos saludables. Adicional- mente se ha mencionado que la concentración de los migrantes en comunidades con personas de su mismo origen se asocia con una mejor salud psicológica. En general se puede decir que la adopción de nuevos comportamientos puede afectar la salud de los migrantes y sobre todo en aquellos que tienen una edad más avan- zada. Es por ello que en este artículo se tiene como objetivo principal analizar las condiciones de salud de la población adulta mayor de origen mexicano que reside en EU y las condiciones de salud de las personas mayores en México. Para llevar a cabo lo anterior se utilizan como fuentes de datos la National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) 2012 (National Center for Health Statistics, 2013) y la Encuesta Nacional sobre Salud y Envejecimiento en México 2012 (Instituto Nacional de Es- tadística y Geografía, 2013a)
