El catálogo de la primera exposición anual de la escuela de bellas artes como documento e indicio histórico

The catalogue of the Annual Exhibition of the School of Fine Arts —Bogotá, 1886— is read as a historical index of the field of art in Colombia in the late nineteenth century under the assumption that this catalog contains a tacit discourse on this field. While the catalog apparently seems a written production neutral in ideological terms, considering it as a discourse —operating from and to a context and specifically performing a sociocultural function— ceases to become something deliberative and purposeful. In the first instance, it ponders on two assumptions about the nature of the document: the first, which is not, by itself, the historical source as this is an epistemological and discursive construction of the historian, and the second, that it is not possible to hold the respective positivist presuppositions that ending in the reification of it. And secondly, that the theoretical assumptions that underlay in the catalogue as historical index are revealed, thus making the reading of the historical specificity of it, that is to say, establishing the meaning and value of a particular fact —the social circulation of catalogue— in a definite context. Consequently, the discourse is seen not only as a set of knowledge, ideas, beliefs, assumptions, prejudices, notions, concepts and values that underlay in any document, but also as a formulation of reasonable opinions, analysis and value judgments on a concrete fact in a specific cultural context. Furthermore, to maximize the explanatory power of this context, the later is characterized by five aspects related to each other: the social validation of art; the political project of The Regeneration; the ideological strength of the notion of civilization; the consumption of art and culture; the invention of the myth of the elite’s taste; and the hierarchy of the types of representation in art. In addition, it renounces the possibility that the discourse contains an inner sense itself —that can practically be reduced to the information provided on the respective authors and works mentioned— so that the catalogue can be read in a dialogical way, relating this information with specific aspects of socio-cultural context mentioned above.Se lee el catálogo de la Exposición Anual de la Escuela de Bellas Artes —realizada en Bogotá en 1886— como un indicio histórico del campo del arte en Colombia a finales del siglo xix, con base en el supuesto de que este catálogo contiene un discurso tácito sobre este campo. Si bien el catálogo parece una producción escrita aparentemente neutra en términos ideológicos, al considerarlo como un discurso —que opera desde y para un contexto y cumple una función sociocultural específica—, deja de serlo para convertirse en algo deliberante e intencionado. En primera instancia, se reflexiona según dos presupuestos sobre la naturaleza del documento: el primero, que no constituye, por sí mismo, la fuente histórica dado que esta es una construcción epistemológica y discursiva del historiador, y el segundo, que no resulta posible sostener los respectivos presupuestos positivistas que terminan en su reificación. En segunda instancia, se aclaran los supuestos teóricos que subyacen en la concepción del catálogo como indicio histórico para realizar su lectura y revelar su especificidad histórica, es decir, establecer el sentido y el valor de un hecho particular —la circulación social del catálogo— en un contexto concreto. En consecuencia, el discurso se concibe no solo como el conjunto de conocimientos, ideas, creencias, presupuestos, prejuicios, nociones, conceptos y valores que subyacen en cualquier documento, sino además como una formulación argumentada de opiniones, análisis y juicios de valor sobre un hecho concreto en un contexto sociocultural específico
