Introduction: Olfaction is a very important sense for basic functions such as orientation, feeding, hazard recognition and social communication. Around 5% of the European population suffers from some sort of olfactory dysfunction. Despite this, people are often unaware of their deficit. Objective: Provide an overview of the main causes of olfaction disorders, to evaluate smell related symptoms and to manage properly these disorders in Primary Health Care. Methods: It was performed a literature search in the PubMed database, using the MeSH terms: Olfaction disorders, Dysosmia and Diagnosis.
