Producción e intercambio de jade en las Tierras Bajas mayas

The value and social significance of jade in Mesoamerica as well as its central place in the ritual and politics of the Classic period has been the object of a broad range of studies. In this paper I present the technological reanalysis of the Cancuen jade workshop, showing that the craftspeople from this Late Classic site did not produce finish objects, but rather that they only focused on the production of raw preforms. My study shows that these preforms were not ready to be polished and that the production debris corresponding to later stages of production are also lacking in the rest of the site. The quantitative comparison between the material from the workshop and that from the rest of the site enables me to show that Cancuen exported such preforms towards other sites. Such data corresponds to the type of production debris found in certain consuming sites in the Maya Lowlands, and enables me to suggest a model where production sites such as Cancuen probably exported shaped preforms to consumer sites, which then worked them the way they wanted according to their own lapidary tradition. Interestingly, This system is fairly similar to the one that was in use in the Mexica empire during the Post-Classic period.El valor y significado simbólico del jade en Mesoamérica así como su papel central en la política y el ritual ha sido el enfoque de muchos estudios. En este artículo, a través del re-análisis tecnológico del material del taller de Cancuen mostramos que los artesanos de este sitio del Clásico Tardío no producían objetos terminados ni semi-terminados, sino que sólo se encargaban de las primeras etapas de producción: la selección de las mejores partes de los bloques y, en menor proporción, la fabricación de unas preformas de forma cuadrangular y circular. Este trabajo permite decir que estas preformas no estaban listas para ser pulidas y los desechos correspondientes a estas etapas están ausentes en el resto del sitio. La comparación entre el material del taller y el del resto del sitio permite mostrar que Cancuen exportaba estas preformas hacia otros sitios. Este dato corresponde con el tipo de desechos de jade que se encuentran en ciertos sitios consumidores de las tierras bajas, y me permite proponer un modelo, donde ciertos sitios productores exportaban preformas que luego eran retrabajadas por artesanos de ciertos sitios consumidores. De manera interesante, esta organización de los intercambios es bastante similar a la que parecen haber tenido los Mexicas en el Postclásico
