This article highlights two particularities of ground rent determination and appropriation in the oil industry. First, it shows that the non-renewability of oil leads to the preponderance of political and/or institutional forms in the exercise of land ownership. Second, it claims that the distinction between resource and surface ownership generates a tendency towards the unification between the functions of the capitalist and the landlord.
