In the Middle East, derived from the ancient traditions of the Indo-European riders, began to develop a new type of military unit as had not been seen before in the ancient world: the cataphract heavy cavalry. At the eaves of various eastern civilizations and cultures, the cataphracts began a slow evolutionary process, which earned them the fear of the forces that opposed them in combat. With a great flexibility, this type of cavalry acquired new functions and equipment depending on the situation, which allowed them to increase their versatility in actions, as an anti-cavalry unit, or as a remote attack platform by equipping themselves with composite arcs.
