This article describes and analyzes how local identity is represented in Ukamau (Jorge Sanjinés, 1966) and the way in which the variegated character of Bolivian society is exhibited. Dialoguing with an extensive critical corpus, I propose another way of reading the conjunction of diverse materials and procedures that characterizes the film —usually understood as dissonant–, underscoring its capacity to interrogate with audacity the problem of national identity. The first part of the text explains the historical conditions in which the film is produced and premiered, the second proposes a theoretical perspective considering as central the ideas of variegated society, heterogeneity and ch'ixi figurations; and the last one advances in the read...
