The article deals with the role of the university transformations under the National Innovation Systems (NHIS), as the institution has been asked to internalize different functions, in addition to teaching, research and extension traditionally held. The objective is to conduct a discussion on the challenges facing the university in the twenty-first century, especially those directly related to the support for protection activities, transfer and management of intellectual property (IP).
