This article analyzes the use domestic servants made of Mexico City newspapers to offer their labor. Using the announcements published by masters and servants during the first three decades of the 19th century as a source, the aim is to show that this mechanism, alternating with verbal recommendations, constituted a useful means of entering a labor market characterized by an oversupply of those willing to offer their services. In addition to highlighting a group of workers who were mostly illiterate, unlike the educated elites historiography usually identifies as the main consumers of printed matter, it explores certain aspects that explain how they positioned themselves in the event of unemployment.
