The following article presents as basic objective, the approach to hemispheric security in America from three important historical moments: the Cold War, post-Cold War and the current period. In an introductory section, there will be a conceptual approach to security in the light of some authors in international relations and propose a suitable definition of it. Subsequently, there will be a brief historical overview of the regional security system during the Cold War, post-Cold War and the present, reflecting the latter effect on the present and future prospects of the TIAR and the OAS, the arms race ahead particularly in South America, and the current situation of drug trafficking and organized crime in Mexico.El siguiente artículo tiene como objetivo básico el abordaje de la seguridad hemisférica en América desde tres momentos históricos importantes: la Guerra Fría, la Posguerra Fría y el período actual. En una parte introductoria se hará una aproximación conceptual de la seguridad a la luz de algunos autores de las relaciones internacionales y se propondrá una definición propia de la misma. Posteriormente se hará un breve recorrido histórico por el sistema de seguridad regional durante la Guerra Fría, la Posguerra Fría y la actualidad, reflexionando en este último sentido acerca de las perspectivas presentes y futuras del Tratado Interamericano de Asistencia Recíproca (TIAR) y de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA), de la carrera armamentista adelantada particularmente en Suramérica, y de la actual situación de narcotráfico y crimen organizado en Méxic
