Abstract This article explores the association between some of the conditions of social deterioration from a sample of individuals and their participation in drug trafficking, starting from social theories that emphasize different factors of the transgression of the law context. Following a quantitative methodology, based on a new database that arose from analyzing the files from 371 subjects, inmates committed for drug crimes in the state of Sonora (Mexico). The findings show that having a criminal record, consumption of illegal drugs, conditions of poverty, educational lag, family disintegration, and residence in said state influence participation in drug trafficking.
