Razón, ciudad y democracia en Benito Spinoza

This paper attempts to show the internal unity of the three elements —ratio, civitas, libertas— which constitute the political philosophy of Spinoza. Methodologically his thought corresponds to the objective model of the new science, which implies a break with the normative model of practical reason in natural law. Spinoza departs from a physicalist ontological conception of nature, which reduces freedom to rational necessity and natural right to the natural power of man («tantum iuris quantum potentiae»). His illustrated program «from bondage to freedom by knowledge » does not imply a normative moral solution to the problem of living together, but a genetic solution by virtue of the need to find an emergency exit to the impasse of the natural state of war under the fear of death. In this process, reason itself emerges from the womb of affection, through the interaction of the passions of fear and sympathy with the biological principle of interest. Once it has emerged in the form of «common notions», this utilitarian reason enhances the positive feelings of sympathy and cooperation and underpins the agreement to live together under the law. On the basis of this civic contract, the difference between potentia and potestas, ius and lex respectively, people and State, is established in an internal dialectical relationship in which the multitudinis potentia is ultimately decisive. This means that the most natural and rational regime is democracy, which is the only regime that guarantees that the original natural law may become public social right.Este artículo intenta mostrar la unidad interna de los tres radicales —ratio, civitas, libertas— que constituyen la filosofía política de Spinoza. Metódicamente su pensamiento responde al modelo objetivo de la nueva ciencia, lo que implica una ruptura con el modelo normativo de la razón práctica en el iusnaturalismo. Spinoza parte de un concepto ontológico fisicalista de naturaleza, que reduce la libertad a la necesidad racional y el derecho natural a cuanto alcanza la potencia natural del hombre («tantum iuris quantum potentiae»). Su programa ilustrado «de la servidumbre a la libertad mediante el conocimiento» no implica una solución ético normativa al problema de la convivencia, sino una solución genética en virtud de la necesidad de hallar una salida de emergencia al impasse del estado natural de guerra bajo el miedo a la muerte. En esta salida, emerge la razón misma desde el seno de los afectos, en la interacción de las pasiones de temor y simpatía con el principio biológico del interés. Una vez emergida en «las nociones comunes», esta razón utilitaria potencia los sentimientos positivos de simpatía y cooperación y garantiza el acuerdo de convivencia bajo leyes. Sobre esta base del contrato político, se establece la diferencia entre potentia y potestas, ius y lex respectivamente, pueblo y Estado, en una relación dialéctica interna, en que la potentia multitudinis es la determinante en última instancia. Esto conlleva que el régimen más natural y racional sea la democracia, y el único que garantiza que el derecho natural primigenio pueda transformarse en derecho público social
