In the 19th century, sailing boats entering the ports of Carmen and Campeche carried a wide range of products from Europe and UnitedStates, and left with a single commodity,Campeche wood. The case of B. Anizan and Co., run by two French monks, perfectly illustrates how foreigners built a vast yet ephemeral trade emporium by extracting and exporting Campeche wood. However, how did they man-age to successfully integrate into the regional elite of the time?
