This article discusses the possibility/infeasibility of emancipatory social work in a capitalist and unequal society, taking into account the formulations of the Radical Social Work and of the Movement of Reconceptualization in Latin America. The article analyzes the historical characteristics of social work as a profession under four political-ideological positions, emphasizing the limitations of the economic reductionism as over-determinant of the professional choices and of the development of the self, as opposed to the analysis of politics in general and of everyday life in particular as a power relation.
