Cuerpo y demencia: La fisonomía de la incapacidad en Santiago de Chile (1855-1900)

Taking the fact that Chilean medicine saw human appearance as an indicator of what happened inside the body, this article problematizes individual corporal signs as a diagnostics tool. It approaches corporal aspects in the field of civil justice, and the uses of the body in legally and medically identifying insanity. It is based on the expert reports completed in processes of interdiction by reason of dementia during the second half of the 19th century in Santiago de Chile, with the purpose of describing the corporal base that contributed to the interpretation of mental illness and individual capacity.Partiendo de la base que la medicina chilena reconoció en la apariencia humana un indicador de lo que ocurría en el interior del cuerpo, este artículo problematiza los signos corporales individuales como herramienta de diagnóstico. Aborda lo corporal en el plano de la justicia civil y los usos del cuerpo en la identificación médico-legal de la locura. Se basa en los reportes periciales realizados en procesos de interdicción por demencia durante la segunda mitad del siglo xix en Santiago de Chile, con el objeto de trazar el sustrato corporal que nutrió la interpretación de la enfermedad mental y la capacidad individual
