Antropologia Ecológica: Uma Área da Ciência a Serviço da Sustentabilidade

Environmental changes have awakened interest not only from the science but also the government and the society due the pessimistic predictions about the future of the humankind. The traditional capitalist model appears as the main cause of this status quo which has been causing global reactions scientific perspective as well from institutions, local and international social movements that has been warning about the urgent need of changes in the economy, politics and society’s actions. These changes require a multidisciplinary view about the current issues and possible solutions. In that context, the Anthropology is part of the effort that through understanding mankind and its relationship with the environment, enables new findings that supports the planet’s effort to build an ecological culture aligned with the current needs and with the development of a truly sustainable society. Anthropological developments from the last decades show this possibility. Therefore, the reflections on this essay expects to contribute to raise awareness about the issue.Mudanças ambientais têm despertado a atenção não somente da ciência, mas também de governos e da sociedade civil, em razão dos prognósticos pessimistas sobre o futuro da humanidade. O modelo capitalista tradicional surge como principal responsável por esse status quo, o que tem despertado reações globais, tanto por parte da ciência, como de instituições e movimentos sociais, locais e internacionais, que vêm alertando sobre a necessidade urgente de mudanças na economia, na política e nas ações da sociedade civil. Essas mudanças exigem uma visão multidisciplinar sobre os problemas atuais e as possíveis soluções. A Antropologia se insere nesse esforço possibilitando, a partir do entendimento do homem e de suas relações com o ambiente natural, novos conhecimentos que suportem o esforço planetário de se construir uma nova cultura ecológica coerente com as necessidades da contemporaneidade e com o desenvolvimento de uma sociedade verdadeiramente sustentável. Desenvolvimentos antropológicos das últimas décadas mostram essa possibilidade. Espera-se, com a discussão neste ensaio, contribuir para uma maior conscientização sobre esta problemática
