In 1929 Los de abajo, by Mariano Azuela, was published in the United States, with illustrations of José Clemente Orozco. The Mexican painter had arrived in 1927 to the Big Apple, from where he made known to the American public the revolutionary disasters through a collection of drawings, engravings and watercolors, later entitled Mexico in Revolution. Since they seem to derive artistically from that collection, the drawings with which Orozco illustrates Azuela’s novel are not a mere graphic replica of the contents of the text, but constitute a particular vision of the armed struggle.
