This paper proposes a re-reading of La chambre claire (1980) from a mourning-grief approach —through the concepts of work of mourning, relic and spectre. We postulate that photography can be conceived as relic because of its paradoxal deictic gesture: it points out something that once was but no longer is, something that still lives in that image that both certifies its past existence and generates an illusion of presence. Photography, as a material object, acts on the observing subject promoting a somatic-emotional reaction in the form of a spectral performance: the image causes pain because it points to a return of the dead.
