This document presents an overview of the current state of knowledge about soil degradation by water erosion, with an emphasis in its assessment and mapping. The fundamentals and historical aspects of water erosion are outlined. Several methodological categories used in the study and evaluation of soil degradation and some implementation experiences are presented. The employment of remote sensors and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is highlighted. With regard to the remote sensors, the review approaches the role of satellite images as quantitative and qualitative support for the research and assessment of erosion, because these modalities allow to display and track that process in space and time.
