Utilising exploratory qualitative research, this paper investigates the need to guarantee sufficient security for tourists. The sense of safety is considered to be important and forms the foundation of Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Tourists are vulnerable to a certain degree in that they are in a situation where the territory, culture and language are all unfamiliar to them. There is an expectation that their hosts will care of them. That is the hallmark of good hospitality.
