The paper attempts to address the multiplicity of functions conferred on the myth in Books II, III and X of Plato's Republic realizing the paradoxes that are generated in their assessment along the three books. The myth is associated with the lowest of the human soul and, yet, at the same time is considered as an essential part of, for example, their educational plan: What is the prevailing criterion? What interconnections are generated? What is the relationship between myth and truth? Three lines of approach articulated this writing: "Myth as metaphor of philosophical thought", "The noble lie and the convergence of two functions" and "Wisdom of the myth" concerning book II, III and X respectively.
