Censoring Translations in 18th-Century Portugal: Censorship Practices Regarding the Portuguese Vernacular, 1770-1790

In the final period of the Portuguese Ancien Regime, the censorship structure established during the reignof Dom José I served as a direct and fundamental agent in defining the scholarly rules governing the Portuguese language. Throughout the last decades of the eighteenth century, the censors regulated texts that were printed or circulated within the Empire,and also corrected and defined spelling rules, literary styles, grammar, and, in particular, the use of “foreign” words.
