The use of null subjects is one of the well known parameters of cross-linguistic variation, opposing languages in which subject omission is grammatical to languages in which it is not. The analysis of sentences produced by a group of children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI) and two control groups revealed a strong preference for using null subjects when the wh-word was an adjunct, with a higher proportion than when it was an argument. This criterion of subject omission based on the distinction between adjunct and argument is not operational in Spanish, but in languages like Chinese, in which null subjects are only allowed when the element moved to the topic position is an adjunct.
