Intermediarios del mundo fronterizo con los Estados Nacionales. Chile y Argentina. Siglo XIX

After the period marked by Pincheiras’ royalist guerrilla (1818-1832), some subjects placed themselves on the scene acting as strategic intermediaries between the indigenous communities and the Republican authorities. These were mobilized on the vast border extending through Araucanía, Norpatagonia and Pampas, inserted in the process of formation and consolidation of the Argentine and Chilean States.The present work aims at analysing the participation of these intermediaries, controversial as well as necessary in the intra and inter-ethnic relations during the nineteenth century. Where did they come from? What links did they hold inside and outside the border areas? Why did they emerge as key actors in the politics of the states in formation? These are some of the questions that have guided and enabled us to approach the complexity of this issue. In this study we delve into two cases in particular: Commander and Border Commissioner Antonio Zúñiga and Captain Domingo Salvo. Both men were appointed by the Chilean government to carry out frontier functions while still participating in old raid practices in the pampas of Buenos Aires and keeping their friendship, and compadrazgo with regional lonkos. From a regional and ethnohistorical approach, we analyse borders as social and dynamic spaces of multi-interactions. We confront and articulate specialized bibliography with a documentary corpus collected in archives, among which we highlight a 1847 Mendoza indictment containing information significant for the rereading proposed in this investigation. We add a diversity of expeditionary narrative chronicles and stories of travellers who freely moved throughout the region, and we also include the contribution of that period press. Después de la etapa marcada por la guerrilla realista pincheirina (1818-1832) algunos sujetos se reposicionaron en la escena actuando como intermediarios estratégicos entre las comunidades indígenas y las autoridades republicanas. Éstos se movilizaban por el vasto espacio fronterizo que se extendía por Araucanía, norpatagonia y pampas, pero ahora insertos en el proceso de formación y consolidación del estado argentino y chileno. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar la participación de dichos intermediarios, tan controversiales como necesarios en las relaciones intra e inter étnicas de gran parte del siglo XIX ¿De dónde procedían? ¿Qué vínculos mantenían dentro y fuera de las fronteras? ¿Por qué emergen como actores claves en la política de los estados en formación? Estos son algunos de los interrogantes que guiaron la investigación pudiendo aproximarnos a la complejidad que ofrece la temática en cuestión. En este sentido, profundizamos en dos casos en particular, el del Comandante y Comisario de Frontera Antonio Zúñiga y el del Capitán Domingo Salvo, ambos nombrados por el gobierno chileno para cumplir funciones “fronteras adentro” mientras seguían participando de viejas prácticas maloneras en las pampas bonaerenses y mantenían su amistad y compadrazgo con lonkos regionales. Desde un enfoque regional y etnohistórico abordamos las fronteras como espacios sociales, dinámicos y de múltiples interacciones. Confrontamos y articulamos bibliografía especializada con un corpus documental relevado en distintos archivos, destacándose un sumario realizado en Mendoza en 1847 que contiene información significativa para la relectura propuesta. Sumamos una diversidad de crónicas de narrativa expedicionaria y relatos de viajeros que transitaron por la región y también el aporte de la prensa de época.
