Las Repúblicas Bálticas cumplen 100 años

This year 2018, after a century of struggles to preserve its national identity, the Baltic region celebrates the declaration of independence of the republics of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Declaring independence is not the same as achieving sovereignty, especially when we speak of small states with very powerful neighbors. Tallinn, Riga and Vilna were capitals of Soviet republics integrated into the USSR for just over half of the centenary we celebrate. The celebrations maybe that is why they are being so especially important. It is not easy to understand the singular relevance that the Baltic republics have given to these centenarians without taking into account their history, their present political, social, demographic, cultural reality and the threat that Russian revisionism supposes for their full sovereignty. For centuries, Danes, Germans, Swedes, Poles and Russians have dominated Baltic republics. However, national sentiment, cultural identity and desire for independence have not been diluted despite external pressures. One can only explain the transcendence that the Baltic republics have given to these celebrations by putting them in context. The Russification, the ethnic diversity of the population and its distribution, the situation of non-citizens, the demographic problems associated with depopulation and aging, the positioning of public opinion, the language policy and the insecurity generated by the renewed Russian assertiveness are points that necessarily be considered.Este año 2018, después de un siglo de luchas por preservar su identidad nacional, la región báltica celebra la declaración de independencia de las repúblicas de Estonia, Letonia y Lituania. Declarar la independencia no es lo mismo que alcanzar la soberanía, sobre todo cuando hablamos de pequeños Estados con vecinos de mucho peso. Tallin, Riga y Vilna fueron capitales de repúblicas soviéticas integradas en la URSS durante algo más de la mitad del centenario que celebramos. Quizá por eso los aniversarios están siendo tan especialmente importantes. No es fácil entender la singular relevancia que las repúblicas bálticas han otorgado a estos centenarios sin tener en cuenta su historia, su presente realidad política, social, demográfica, cultural y la amenaza que para su plena soberanía supone el revisionismo ruso. Durante siglos estos pueblos han sido dominados por daneses, alemanes, suecos, polacos y rusos. Sin embargo, el sentimiento nacional, su identidad cultural y su deseo de independencia no se han diluido a pesar de las presiones externas. Solo se puede explicar la transcendencia que las repúblicas bálticas han otorgado a estas celebraciones poniéndolas en contexto. La rusificación, la diversidad étnica de la población y su distribución, la situación de los no ciudadanos, los problemas demográficos asociados a la despoblación y el envejecimiento, el posicionamiento de la opinión pública, la política idiomática y la inseguridad generada por la renovada asertividad rusa son puntos que necesariamente hay que considerar
