Identidades fronterizas en el contexto andalusí: los muladíes

Andalusi-Arabic society was made up of different ethnic, linguistic, and religious communities. The present article focuses its attention on one of these communities, to which Spanish historiography has a still unpaid debt. We are referring to the Muladi: the native population converted to Islam. We focus our study of the Muladi community having in mind the perspective of social and sociolinguistic history. Our objective is to analyze the successive processes of cultural change experimented by this community during the first three centuries of Andalusi-Arabic history (seventh to tenth century AD). We will try to get to know the dynamics of Islamization processes and linguistic arabization and the identity change that converted the Iberian Christians (Visigoths) to Andalusi-Arabic. This change confirms, once more, that identities are cultural constructs in a permanent transformation process, not inherited, imposed and inalienable.La sociedad andalusí estaba integrada por distintas comunidades étnicas, lingüísticas y confesionales. El presente artículo se centra en una de estas comunidades, con la que la historiografía española tiene una deuda aún no saldada. Nos referimos a los muladíes: los autóctonos conversos al Islam. Enfocamos el estudio de la comunidad muladí desde la perspectiva de la historia social y de la sociolingüística. Nuestro objetivo es analizar los sucesivos procesos de cambio cultural que experimentó esta comunidad en los tres primeros siglos de la historia andalusí (VIII-X). Intentaremos conocer la dinámica de los procesos de islamización y arabización lingüística y el cambio de identidad que convirtió a los hispano-godos en andalusíes. Este cambio confirma, una vez más, que las identidades son constructos culturales en permanente proceso de transformación y no conceptos heredados, impuestos e irrenunciables.
