El queratocono, su diagnóstico y manejo. Una revisión bibliográfica

Keratoconus is a non-inflammatory corneal disease that affects the visual acuity progressively of carriers. The causes have not been specified, however, it is thought that its etiology is multifactorial. It equally affects men and women of any race or ethnicity, and although the most common ages of diagnosis range between 20 and 40 years it develops in childhood and takes about 10 years to manifest clinically. The present article intends to carry out a bibliographic review of the most relevant elements of this condition. The study of this health problem is relevant considering that people carrying the disease often suffer progressive deterioration of vision, which compromises the performance of daily activities, often affects the emotional sphere and the social and workplace development. It also generates concerns in the family environment and, therefore, affects the quality of life of these patients.El queratocono es una enfermedad corneal no inflamatoria que afecta la agudeza visual progresivamente de las personas portadoras. Las causas no se han precisado, sin embargo, se piensa que su etiología es multifactorial. Afecta por igual a hombres y mujeres de cualquier raza o etnia, y aunque las edades más comunes de diagnóstico oscilan entre los 20 y 40 años se desarrolla en la niñez y demora cerca de 10 años en manifestarse clínicamente. El presente artículo pretende realizar una revisión bibliográfica de los elementos más relevantes de esta afección. El estudio de esta problemática de salud es relevante considerando que las personas portadoras de la enfermedad con frecuencia sufren el deterioro progresivo de la visión, que compromete la realización de actividades diarias, suele afectar la esfera emocional y el desenvolvimiento en el ámbito laboral y social, asimismo genera preocupaciones en el entorno familiar y, por tanto, afecta la calidad de vida de estos pacientes
